SomaBox
A portable device that stores thousands of books, educational videos, audio content and edutainment materials, and serves them to student devices over its own wireless network. No internet connection is needed to use it.
How SomaBox
works.
SomaBox is a device that holds a school's digital library and serves it to nearby student devices. Students connect to the box, not through it.
The content is on the box.
Books, videos and audio are stored on the device itself.
Students connect to the box.
It creates its own wireless network. Students open it in a browser on a phone, tablet or laptop. Up to 200 devices at once.
An admin updates it when there is internet.
SomaBox can check whether newer versions of its content are available, and the admin downloads what they want. Students do not need internet at any point.
Why schools that already have internet use it
No bandwidth cost per student
Video and other large files come from the box over the local network, not from the school's internet connection.
It keeps working during outages
Nothing about lessons depends on the school's internet being up.
Students only reach approved content
They connect to the box, so there is no open internet to filter or supervise.
Teachers' content stays in the school
Material a teacher adds is available across the school and is not uploaded anywhere.

The full library is available with no connection at all.
Schools with internet
Large files load from the box instead of the school's connection, and students stay on approved content.

Departments keep their own collections and serve heavy course material to full lecture rooms.

Patrons use the collection on their own devices without the library paying for the traffic.
